Ontario Municipal Elections on October 26: Why the Unprecedented Interest?

Ontario municipal elections have, as in past years, often been neglected elections that few people pay attention to. Many residents do not fully appreciate the importance of municipal elections — or even the role municipalities play in our daily lives. Attention has always gone to federal and provincial elections, for clear reasons: issues that directly touch citizens' lives such as health, education and taxes; foreign policy issues such as Palestine; and internal security issues such as Islamophobia.

This year, something is different. We are days away from municipal elections on October 26, and we are seeing unprecedented interest from the Arab and Muslim community — both from candidates and from voters. There are wide discussions and many questions: whom should we vote for, and why?

Why this sudden interest? One of the main reasons is that issues close to our hearts have entered municipal politics directly and indirectly — among them the issue of Palestine. Organizing protests and rallies in public spaces managed by municipalities has become a subject of debate: are demonstrations allowed, and who manages these public spaces and facilities? The municipality. The fathers' rights rally of 2023 is another example, when our community faced difficulties with the city and its mayor at the time, Bonnie Crombie. Add to that rising crime in many cities, car theft, and the complexities of business licensing — important issues that now touch residents in their daily lives.

That is why we encourage everyone to take part in choosing candidates for Mayor and Councillor — and let us not forget School Board Trustees, a very important role with a direct impact on our children's activities in public schools and on the curriculum itself.

Municipal elections matter. We urge everyone to participate, to research, to ask questions, and to carefully evaluate the best options and the best candidates.
